The Galactic Emporium has a new Jump Fuel tab, and for the first time captains can buy and sell refined jump fuel directly to one another. Until now, if you ran dry a long way from home there was very little anyone could do about it. Fuel was something you made yourself or went without. That changes today. Any fuel sitting in your Captain’s Refinery Account can be put up for sale, and any captain in the galaxy can buy it.
Here is the part worth reading twice, because it catches people out. Selling draws from your Refinery Account, never from your ship’s tank. The fuel you are actually flying on is completely safe and cannot be sold by accident. On the other side, fuel you buy lands in your Refinery Account rather than going straight into your ship. Dock at any Jump Fuel Refinery and use the transfer slider to move it across, exactly as you would with fuel you refined yourself.
Both the buying and selling screens have a Where does it come from panel that walks you through it if you would rather see it laid out. Listings can be bought in part, so if a captain has five thousand units up and you only need eighty, take eighty. The board sorts cheapest first and the top listing wears a Best Price badge, which means undercutting your rivals is now a perfectly legitimate business strategy.
We fully expect a certain amount of jostling over that top slot. There is a floor of one hundred credits per unit, so nobody can dump fuel for nothing and wreck the market for the captains who actually work for it. The Emporium takes its usual five percent commission on a sale, and your Trade skill decides how many fuel listings you can run at once, same as everywhere else in the market. Listed fuel is held in escrow while it waits for a buyer, so plan your jumps before you list a big stack. Cancel a listing at any time and every remaining unit goes straight back into your account.
One last thing worth appreciating. Every single unit on that board was synthesised by another captain out of real ore and real gas, hauled back and refined over ten minutes at a time. When you buy fuel here you are buying somebody’s afternoon at the refinery, and they are getting paid for it. Refining has quietly become a trade you can make a living from.
